Rooted in the belief that food is medicine, CHEF is a Culinary Health Education program that teaches basic nutrition and practical cooking skills, with the long-term goal of motivating individuals and communities to adopt and sustain healthier eating habits.
Funded by a grant from Goldsbury Foundation, and created in partnership with The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, the mission of CHEF is to drive healthy eating among children and families by promoting nutritious foods and home cooking as key ingredients in the recipe for life-long health and wellness.
CHEF classes are designed to be engaging and hands-on. Students will first sit through a culinary demonstration, where the instructor will review the skills used in the recipe and give an overview of nutrition information. After the demonstration, students will break into groups and recreate the recipe on their own. Instructors and staff are always on hand to provide encouragement and answer any questions a student might have.
In our Teaching Kitchen settings, a child must be six years old to participate. However, in our school settings, we teach students as young as 4 – 5 years old. We provide child-safe knives and no-heat recipes to keep our younger students safe when participating in a class.
We have six Teaching Kitchens throughout San Antonio located at; The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, the Boys & Girls Club/Mays Family Clubhouse, the San Antonio Botanical Garden, the Najim Family YMCA, the Mays Family YMCA at Potranco, and the Witte Museum. Additionally, we have a tent at Pearl Farmers Market, where we offer culinary demonstrations every Saturday.

We are always looking for passionate individuals to help us teach the youth of San Antonio how to make better choices and become more confident in the kitchen! We have volunteer opportunities at our Teaching Kitchens and in our school settings.

Classes at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio are available in English and Spanish, have daytime and evening availability, and are free to patients of the hospital. Just yourself and a willingness to try new foods and have fun! CHEF provides all the cooking equipment, aprons, and food for our classes. All that we ask is that you wear flat, close-toed shoes for your own safety.
